Advantages of attending an ASN programAn Associate of Science in Nursing degree will provide you with basic technical nursing skills. You will be prepared for entry-level positions in giving bedside care, more often in hospital settings, extended and acute care facilities. You will be prepared to work directly with patients suffering from common health problems and help others achieve an optimal level of wellness. An ASN education prepares nurses to use critical thinking in the application of the nursing process as the problem-solving approach to nursing care. You will also be prepared to continue your education and work toward a bachelor's degree in nursing.

Associate of Science in Nursing for the Licensed Practical Nurse (ASN) provides students who are licensed practical nurses opportunities to earn credit by examinations for selected ASN courses.
Opportunities to see nurses in actionIf you would like to spend a few hours watching a nurse at work, Nursing 2000 or shadow-a-nurse program in your area may be able to assist you. You might also contact a local hospital, clinic, or physician's office for opportunities to see nurses in action. Some adult learners have also taken advantage of employment opportunities in health care facilities.
Specialty-area nursing in the ASN programAfter program completion, which includes all major areas of nursing, you can explore a speciality area in nursing. Pursuing your education by attending a bachelor in nursing program may provide additional opportunities.
High School Courses neededStudents who are most successful will have a strong background in English, biology, chemistry, and math. All applicants considering the ASN program will need to have completed three years of college prep math (Algebra I and II, Geometry), four years of college prep English, one year of Biology (with a C of higher), and one year of Chemistry (with a C or higher).
Applying for admission to the ASN programStudents who receive general admission and indicate an interest in the ASN program will automatically have their credentials forwarded to the School of Nursing. You will be contacted by the School of Nursing with directions for applying to the program. Admission to the ASN nursing program is very competitive.
Criteria for admission to the ASN programThere are two categories of admission:
- General University admission students are selected with consideration of a cumulative GPA of 2.82 minimum, SAT/ACT Scores and grades of C or higher in all required science and math classes.
- Transfer admission includes students who have attended or presently attend another university or college. They also follow the above requirements.
Courses required to earn the ASN degreeA minimum of 66 credit hours must be successfully completed to earn an ASN degree. The courses include nursing, support courses, and University requirements.
