NUGR 506 Alternative Therapies

2 Credit Hours

Offered: As Needed

Introduces various alternative/complementary treatment modalities available to consumers for the treatment of health conditions. The emphasis will be on subjects such as herbals, naturopathy (vitamins, mineral, foods, and endogenous substances such as melatonin and DHEA) and homeopathy. Additional subjects include philosophies of treatment, acupuncture, aromatherapy, edition, the placebo effect, reiki, and magnetic therapies.

 

NUGR 508 Pharmacology

3 Credit Hours

Offered: Summer

Provides a basis for management of drug therapy for various clients across the lifespan. The focus is drugs used for health maintenance and the treatment of acute episodic and chronic health problems. Emphasis is on rationale for selection, pharmacodynamics, dosing to achieve therapeutic effects and control side effects, cost containment, client/family education and compliance, and legal aspects of prescribing.

 

BIOL 509 Pathophysiology

3 Credit Hours

Offered: Semester I

Provides a comprehensive scientific background for the evaluation of clients in various health care settings. Students will analyze the relationship between normal physiology and the disease state. A brief review of normal physiology and anatomy is included, as well as the Pathophysiology of selected disorders and diseases.

 

NUGR 509 Drug Therapy and Older Adult

This is a course dealing with Applied Pharmacokinetics in clinical practice situations with Older Adults. Drug therapy is individualized to patient needs and disease treatment.

 

NUGR 510 Statistics

3 Credit Hours

This course is unique because it provides a platform for research across disciplines within the healthcare context. Faculty and students learn to work collaboratively within areas of clinical interest. Students interactively critique research literature, develop a research proposal and analyze data. This design emphasizes student understanding and application of research that forwards the scientific progression of clinical practice and scholarship. Software programs used will include Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), and Blackboard (a web-based course management system.) This course enriches student experience by exposure to other health care disciplines, and offers a more varied broader approach to research and scientific inquiry.

 

NUGR 512 Theoretical Frameworks for Advanced Nursing Practice

The course focuses on the analysis and application of theories relevant to advanced nursing practice. Nursing, biomedical, behavioral, social and psychological theories, frameworks, and models will be addressed.

 

NUGR 514 Research Design and Methodology

3 Credit Hours

Offered: Every Semester on-line

The course builds on a basic understanding of research process and focuses on clinical research methodology. Literature review, formulation of problem statements, research design, and critical analysis of published research relevant to advanced nursing practice are emphasized.

 

NUGR 516 Qualitative Methods for Human Inquiry

3 Credit Hours

The course provides the student with the knowledge and skills required to design and conduct research using qualitative methods. An experiential approach to inquiry is emphasized. Students are engaged in fieldwork coupled with continuous dialogue engagement. Particular attention is given to the philosophical orientation and research techniques of a variety of qualitative research methods. Emphasis is placed on ethnography, phenomenology and grounded theory, but students may explore those areas of interpretive inquiry, such as case study, biography, historical, feminist or action approaches, and naturalistic evaluation strategies. Research design, techniques of data collection, analysis, presentation, and issues of validation and ethical conduct will be considered.

 

NUGR 518 Policies and Issues

2 Credit Hours

Offered: Semester II

The four spheres of political action in nursing are discussed. Policy and politics in the workplace, community, professional organizations, and government are examined. In addition, social, economic, legal, ethical and professional forces that have impact on health policy and the health care delivery system are explored. The course will provide opportunity to evaluate critical issues in health care and promote vigorous dialogue as to the provocative dilemmas faced by advanced practice nurses. Specific emphasis is given to the emergence of the advanced practice nurse as a political force through utilization of the Christian philosophy of CARE.

 

NUGR 520 Applied Ethics

2 Credit Hours

Offered: Semester II

This course is designed for graduate students in the disciplines of psychology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, nursing applied sociology, business/leadership majors and undergraduate honors students in the above fields who will be pursing MD, MSW, or other applicable graduate degrees. Building upon underrate philosophical ethics, the format of instruction will be a seminar approach with intensive outside readings and in-depth class discussion. The discussion will include the application of selected ethical theories and principles.

 

NUGR 522 Health Care Informatics

2 Credit Hours

Offered: Every Other Year Semester I

This course will focus on the skills and tools to enable the sharing and use of information to deliver health care and promote health. The student will use health care informatics in helping patients to recognize their role as agents for their own health care. The content includes a combination of computer science, information science, and health care science to assist in the management and processing of data, information and knowledge. The tasks include structuring and processing information to arrive at clinical decisions and build systems to support that processing.

 

NUGR 523 Philosophy of Education

This course focuses on the philosophical underpinning of the education enterprise. Underlying any account of education must lie a conception of human nature and the balance between biological, social and political aspects of education appropriate to contemporary society.

 

NUGR 524 Geropsych

3 Credit Hours

Offered: Every Other Year Semester I

Offers an opportunity for the student to work with a preceptor in the practice setting to be involved in the assessment, decisions for treatment, and evaluation of outcomes regarding the management of common behavioral problems in the older adult. This assessment and evaluation will include the discussions of case reports, psychotropic drug developments, and discoveries in disease research, behavioral interventions, and professional commentary on treatment trends. The student will participate in health care team activities in the therapeutic milieu.

 

NUGR 530 Advanced Practice Nursing Role

2 Credit Hours

Offered: Semester I

Factors influencing advanced nursing practice (concepts of primary and long term care, legal parameters of practice, teaching/learning strategies, community assessment, and interdisciplinary collaboration) provide a foundation for the discussion of roles required of advanced practice nurses. Emphasis is on clinical, interdisciplinary team member, and educator roles with other roles introduced. Informally, this course is an exercise in "Reality Based Dreaming: as the RN moves toward his/her goals of becoming an advanced practice nurse." Comprehending the "narratives" of other advanced practice nurses enhances this process.

 

NUGR 531 Nurse-Midwifery Role

1 Credit Hour

Offered: Every Other Year Semester I

This course provides issues relevant to professional nurse-midwives as it pertains to ethics, philosophies, legal, political and professional responsibilities. The study of the history of the ACNM and important documents are addressed. Analysis of agreements and documents are compared to standards of practice in order to develop collaborative relationships with other health care providers while incorporating the nurse-midwifery process. A written business plan for integrating nurse-midwifery services within various health care settings is completed.

 

NUGR 532 Advanced Health Assessment

4 Credit Hours

Offered: Semester I

Prepares students to conduct a comprehensive assessment of clients, including health history, family history, physical examination, and selected laboratory diagnostics. Developmental, cultural, environmental, nutritional, adaptation, and occupational aspects are included in the assessment. Clinical reasoning provides for differentiation between normal and abnormal findings. Principles of health promotion and illness prevention or early detection are emphasized.

 

NUGR 533 Teaching/Learning Methodology

3 Credit Hours

Offered: Every Other Year Semester II

This course focuses on foundational theories and research in education. The primary emphasis will be placed on the art of teaching. Theories include learning styles, principles of adult learning and frameworks on critical thing. The art of teaching will be explored through a variety of teaching methodologies and teaching strategies. Students will apply learning through the development, implementation, and evaluation of lesson plans in teachings sessions.

 

NUGR 535 Antepartum Care

5 Credit Hours

This course is designed to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge and scientifically based clinical skills required for nurse-midwifery management of pregnant women and their families. Emphasis is on basic prenatal care and client/family education including anticipatory guidance, supportive self-care that enhances a healthy pregnancy and birth, while being sensitive to family, social and cultural issues. Content also includes reproductive anatomy, physiology, basic embryology and fetal development, genetics of reproduction, pregnancy, health promotion and early diagnosis and management of antepartal complications in order to optimize maternal-fetal outcomes. Ethical and legal concerns associated with complications in offer to optimize maternal-fetal outcomes. Ethical and legal concerns associated with women during the antepartal period are discussed.

 

NUGR 543 Curriculum Development and Nursing Education

Curriculum development is approached from the perspective of the nurse educator in academic, clinical, and community settings. Various models of curriculum development are examined and curriculum theory is introduced. The process of curriculum design, implementation and evaluation is addressed. This process guides decision making with respect to what should be taught, how it should be taught, and when where it should be taught. Attention is given to the role and function of accrediting associations in curriculum development.

 

NUGR 544 Management of Health/Illness of Older Adults

4 Credit Hours

Focuses on assessment, diagnosis, and management of selected common acute and chronic health problems and potential health problems of adults. The impact of illness and loss on the client's developmental stage and family role is included with emphasis on health promotion, maintenance, and restoration. Epidemiology, nutrition, pharmacology, non-pharmacological interventions, mental health principles, technical skills, and professional/legal/ethical parameters are integrated. Application of research finding is clinical reasoning skills are required.

 

NUGR 545 Intrapartum Care

5 Credit Hours

Offered: Every Other Year Semester II

This course is designed to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge and scientifically based clinical skill required for the nurse-midwifery management of pregnant women and their families during labor, birth and the immediate postpartum phase. Emphasis is on labor support, birth and birthing techniques along with adaptation to the postpartum phase while promoting immediate maternal/newborn and family bonding. Content also includes anatomy and assessment, birthing techniques and procedures and initiating bonding. A review of the current literature, including evidence-based research will be discussed in order to compare/contrast management options in order to assist clients with informed decision making.

 

NUGR 546 Management of Health/Illness of Women

The focus of the course is on the acquisition of knowledge and skills required to assist women and their families to maintain maximum wellness during pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period. Emphasis is placed on the early diagnosis and management of health deviations and the development of a plan of care that will optimize maternal-fetal-outcome.

 

NUGR 553 Measurement and Evaluation

3 Credit Hours

This course introduces basic measurement concepts, role of measurement in education and the application of measurement and data. Qualities of good measurement instruments, construction of teacher made tests and other classroom assessments, interpretation and evaluation of standardized tests are discussed. The relationship between measurement and educational decision-making is explored through the introductional design models/theories, philosophy, and methodology. Formative and summative education program evaluation studies are explored.

 

NUGR 554 Management of Health/Illness of Older Adults

This course is designed to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge and scientifically based clinical skills required for nurse-midwifery management of the newborn baby, mother and their families. Emphasis is on the importance of continuity care in the postpartum period, client/family education including anticipatory guidance, supportive self-care that enhances a health newborn, positive family bonding and child rearing, while being sensitive to family, social and cultural issues.

 

NUGR 556 Gerontological Practicum

2-4 Credit Hours

The Focus of this Gerontological course is on comprehensive management of health of the older adult in a selected health care setting. The experiences will provide an opportunity for synthesis and application of theory and research to effectively implement advanced Gerontological nursing practice.

 

NUGR 560 Practicum in Nursing Education

4 Credit Hours

Offered: Every Semester with advisor approval

This course provides an opportunity for the student to synthesize and apply the principles of design to complete, incorporating the methods of measurement and evaluation. The student will build on previous teaching experiences with a master nursing teacher in higher education or a health care institution.

 

NUGR 563 Newborn Care

1 Credit Hour

Offered: Every Other Year Summer

This course is designed to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge and scientifically based clinical skills required for nurse-midwifery management of the newborn baby. Emphasis is placed on continuity of care, positive family bonding, and assessment and care of the newborn. Content includes complete physical examination, resuscitation techniques, infant nutrition and newborn complication. Family, social, and cultural issues concerning the care of the newborn are also explored.

 

NUGR 564 Management of Health/Illness Status of Children

5 Credit Hours

Offered: Semester I

The course focus is pediatric primary care. Pediatric Healthy People 2010 Objectives and Clinical Prevention Service Guidelines are utilized to discuss the concepts of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention and health management. Emphasis of the Christian philosophy of CARE is included to assist the student to render culturally competent and spiritually sensitive care. Family centered, community-based care is discussed as the optimum practice model. Developmental principles and family theory are applied.

In addition, the course includes study into the assessment, diagnosis, and management of acute and chronic health problems found in childhood. Development of a management plan that is consistent with community standard of practice in pediatrics is emphasized. The following are vital to plan development: History, development, and physical assessment skills, identification of diagnostic studies, use of meds and safe prescribing practices, educational practice, knowledge in follow-up and referral. Application of evidence based outcomes and clinical reasoning skills are required.

 

NUGR 565/575 Nurse-Midwifery Practicum

Six hours of practicum with nurse-midwife that can be taken in one to two semesters.

 

NUGR 570 Continuous Improvement & Project Management

3 Credit Hours

Offered: Every Other Summer with advisor Approval

This course will provide the student with skills to make a complete assessment of a subsystem of an organization. The student will prioritize data based on the assessment and establish the approach to address and plan for changes. The student will demonstrate the continuous quality improvement methods as they can provide guidance for the development and completion of a project including but not limited to setting standards, increasing efficiency and adopting competitive practices.

 

NUGR 574 Management of Health/illness of the Family

4 Credit Hours

Offered: Semester II

The family course has four primary purposes: first, to provide a capstone experience for students to further develop competence and confidence in their decision making; second, to demonstrate the ability to synthesize knowledge, including spiritual sensitivity and cultural awareness from family theory, science, and advanced practice; third, to continue to nurture the attributes of Caring, specifically for students to recognize personal and social responsibilities inherent in contemporary social issues found within the context of family and community, and fourth, to provide opportunity to demonstrate competence in various roles of the advanced practice nurse and prepare for entry into practice.

 

NUGR 576 & 578 Management Practicums

10 Credit Hours

Offered: Every Semester with Advisor Approval

These courses provide a practice setting environment in which the advanced student applies knowledge and skills learned in the classroom and through readings. Each experience is individualized and builds on your special interest, prior experience, and personal strengths and weaknesses. The student will become actively involved in the nurse executive role under the preceptorship of a nurse manager in a health care organization. The student will have an opportunity to participate in discussions about the topics of management in a two-hour individualized seminar each week. The professor's primary role is one of facilitating learning. The student and the professor will gain knowledge and learn from each other. The journey should be filled with excitement, anticipation toward reaching the goals, and perhaps, just as important, enjoyable along the way.

 

NUGR 580 Organizational Management

1 Credit Hour In Health Care Systems

Offered: Semester I

The course focuses on practice management for health care delivery. Course content includes organizational structure/behavior; office human resources, data, fiscal and case management; program planning and evaluation; marketing and budgeting and monitoring quality care. Content will also focus on preparing a resume, collaborative practice agreements and reimbursement for Nurse Practitioner services. The students will have an opportunity to discuss the business practices of advanced practice nurses who are employed or own their practice.

 

NUGR 590 Research Project

1 Credit Hour

The research project focuses on identifying gaps in the knowledge base for the practice of the nurse practitioner, nurse-midwife, nurse educator, or nurse administrator in conducting research or extensive literature review to broaden the base of knowledge.
